Energy Assessments · Townsville, QLD
NatHERS, Whole of Home and Form 15 energy assessments for Townsville and North Queensland — Climate Zone 1 dry-tropics design, done properly.
NatHERS, BASIX, Section J & Form 15 · Townsville
Townsville is Climate Zone 1 like Cairns, but it's the dry tropics rather than the wet — intense sun, high daytime heat, lower humidity and a bigger day-to-night temperature swing. That changes the design emphasis, and a good assessment reflects it.
We provide NatHERS ratings, Whole of Home scores and Form 15 certificates for Townsville homes and developments, built around how the dry-tropical climate and the region's cyclonic requirements actually behave.
Star ratings and Whole of Home scores for new residential builds and renovations.
The NCC 2022 score covering heating, cooling, hot water, lighting and solar.
Alternative compliance for bold, glazing-heavy designs that miss DTS.
Energy efficiency assessments for commercial and multi-residential buildings.
Certificates for NSW residential development applications.
Energy compliance certificates for Queensland building approvals.
Climate Zone 1, dry tropics. We design for intense sun and a wider day-night temperature range — heavy shading and heat rejection during the day, with ventilation used to flush heat out on cooler nights.
Like all of Zone 1, Townsville is cooling-dominated with no real winter heating requirement, so shading and heat rejection come first. But because the dry tropics cool down more overnight than humid Cairns, there's more scope to shed the day's heat after dark through ventilation.
That means aggressive shading of all glass against the fierce western and northern sun, reflective sarking and a ventilated roof, and windows and fans arranged to flush warm air out on cooler evenings. Lightweight construction still tends to lead, though a modest amount of well-shaded mass can be used to steady the bigger daily swing — a judgement call we make from the modelling, not a rule of thumb.
Townsville's solar exposure is relentless, so unshaded or poorly-shaded glass is the fastest way to fail a rating and cook the house. We prioritise eaves, verandahs, external shading and heat-rejecting glazing, and check every orientation — west glass especially — before adding anything else.
Townsville is under Townsville City Council, and the region is a high cyclonic wind area, which drives glazing, fixing and construction choices that a southern assessor may not account for. Building approval is issued by a private certifier; we prepare the NatHERS certificate and Form 15 to align with the structural and cyclonic requirements.
Both are Climate Zone 1, but Townsville is the dry tropics and Cairns the wet. Townsville's lower humidity and cooler nights give more room to use night ventilation to shed heat, while shading against very strong sun is critical in both. We tailor the modelling to the dry-tropical climate rather than reusing a generic tropical template.
Cyclonic wind ratings influence glazing, shading structures and fixings, which in turn affect the energy model. We assess the home with those constraints in mind so the shading and ventilation strategy is compatible with the structural design, not in conflict with it.
Effectively no. In Climate Zone 1 there's no meaningful winter heating load, so the rating is driven almost entirely by keeping the home cool — shading, ventilation, roof and glazing performance.
Yes. We provide the Form 15 energy compliance certificate with the NatHERS and Whole of Home assessment, ready for your North Queensland certifier.
