NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) is a star rating system that rates the energy efficiency of a home based on its design. The rating ranges from 0 to 10 stars, with higher ratings indicating better thermal performance. Most new homes in Australia are required to achieve a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating under the National Construction Code.
Under the NCC 2022 energy efficiency provisions, most new homes require a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating. However, requirements can vary by state and local council. Some developments and planning overlays may require higher ratings. We can advise you on the specific requirements for your project.
Ideally, as early as possible in the design process. Getting us involved at the design stage means we can provide advice on orientation, glazing, and insulation before plans are finalised — saving you time and money on redesigns. However, we can assess plans at any stage.

A performance solution is an alternative compliance pathway under the NCC. When a building design doesn't comply with the deemed-to-satisfy provisions, a performance solution uses modelling and analysis to demonstrate that the building still meets or exceeds the energy performance requirements. This is common for architecturally unique homes with large areas of glazing or unconventional designs.
Section J of the National Construction Code covers energy efficiency requirements for commercial buildings and some residential developments. A Section J report assesses the building envelope, air-conditioning, ventilation, lighting, and hot water systems to demonstrate compliance with the NCC's energy efficiency provisions.
The Residential Efficiency Scorecard is a government-backed program that rates the energy performance of existing homes on a scale of 1 to 10. An accredited assessor visits your home and evaluates insulation, heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, and more. You'll receive a report with a star rating and prioritised recommendations for improving your home's efficiency.
Turnaround times depend on the complexity of the project and our current workload. Standard NatHERS assessments are typically completed quickly once we receive your complete plans. More complex projects such as performance solutions or large Section J reports may take a little longer. We'll give you a clear timeline when you send us your plans.
